Cold Norton Primary School wins first British Cycling Go-Ride Inter-Schools competition

Cold Norton Primary School hits the big time by winning the first inter-schools competition in cycle sport in the Eastern Region. With stiff competition from Burnham, Purleigh, St Mary’s, and Southminster primary schools, it was a huge team effort which enabled the school to lift the Go-Ride Inter-Schools trophy.

The Go-Ride Inter-Schools competition was the first in Essex and contested by schools from the William de Ferrers Schools Sport Partnership. The competition was co-ordinated by Essex County Council’s Competition Manager, Alison Gurner, working with British Cycling, the national governing body for cycle sport. Maldon District Council provided sponsorship for the trophy, which clearly became a sought after award for the teams. They were all desperate to win the prize for their school!

The teams had been preparing rigorously prior to the competition by taking part in 4 block cycle sport session at their schools, which were delivered by Go-Ride coach, Alison Lilley. The children learnt basic cycling skills and practiced key competition elements to enable them to take part in the Inter-Schools competition and have fun whilst competing.

St Peter’s Secondary School in Burnham, provided an ideal facility to stage a schools competition. The event started off with a 2 lap scratch race for the girls. The riders competed in heats to see if they could qualify for the final and gain valuable points for their team. Pupils from Purleigh Primary were the early pace setters and took the heat wins. The final saw a closely fought competition, with Purleigh Primary taking 1st place in the scratch race final, but Cold Norton had top finishers which stole the points from the other teams.

Meanwhile, the boys where competing in the skills team tag relay. This event was a test of the boys bike handling skills against the clock and required them to negotiate an obstacle course including a slalom course and limbo pole without incurring any time penalties. The fastest 2 teams would qualify for the ride off in the final. Burnham were showing the other teams their sheer pace and skill as they set the fastest time of 3mins 15 seconds in the heats with no penalty points. Southminster pipped the other teams to gain the second place and a spot in the final.

The final team tag relay race started very closely and there wasn’t much to split the two teams. Southminster put Burnham under real pressure as they stepped up the pace halfway through. Southminster then hit some of the skill elements, incurring time penalties. Burnham remained consistent and managed to complete the course in 2mins 39 seconds, faster than their first run, resulting in a win in the event.

The children then switched around with the girls competing in the skills tag relay and the boys in the 2 lap scratch race. The girls team tag relay event was won by Southminster and the boys 2 lap scratch was won by Cold Norton.

As the final points were allocated Cold Norton came out on top with 660 points, Purleigh was second 530 points, 460 points secured third for Southminster, St Mary’s gained 445 points for fourth, and Burnham was fifth with 275. However, all the young people put on a fantastic display of speed and skill.
